The celebration of Easter at Leonidio on Easter Eve is a unique tradition in Greece. Thousands of people set free hot-air balloons made of reed and paper so as to spread the Holy Fire all over the country. This tradition, which originates from Asia, was brought over by sailors in the late 19th century.
Karytaina – The Women’s Bazaar
The women’s bazaar takes place every August in beautiful Karytaina. During this three-day event all the women of Karytaina organize a bazaar where they present exceptionally good home-made products such as various traditional sweets, textiles and embroidery.
Anniversary of the First Peloponnesian Senate – Stemnitsa
The municipality of Gortynia organizes a series of events every June so as to celebrate the anniversary of the first Peloponnesian Senate. During the celebration, which takes place at the square of the village of Stemnitsa, there is a Divine Liturgy in the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi followed by traditional dances.
Chestnut Festival – Kastanitsa, Arcadia
The Chestnut Festival is organized every October at the village of Kastanitsa which is located in the prefecture of Arcadia. This event first began in 1983 and since then it has been taking place every year so as to highlight the nutritional importance of the chestnut, as well as its commercial potential. During the event a lot of products made of chestnut are presented and the visitors can sample them.
The Festival of Tsakonia – Leonidio
The Festival of Tsakonia is organized in Leonidio of Arcadia every summer. Its goal is to highlight the aubergine as the most famous local product. During the festival various different dishes based on the aubergine are presented. This event also combines a lot of singing and dancing.
Battle of Valtetsi – Celebration
The celebration of the Battle of Valtetsi is organized every year at Valtetsi in Arcadia. Its goal is to honour the historic battle that took place in May 1821 and it was one of the most significant battles of the Greek Revolution. During this event there is a Doxology at the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, a wreath laying ceremony and a parade with students.
Pan-Hellenic Folk Song Contest – Lagadia
The municipality of Gortynia organizes the Pan-Hellenic Folk Song Contest every summer at Agia Paraskevi in Lagadia. The goal of this event is to preserve and promote the local folk tradition through folk music.
The Liberation of Tripolitsa - Celebration
One of the most significant events in Arcadia is the celebration for the liberation of Tripolitsa. This event lasts for a few days. There is a Divine Liturgy, a Doxology at the Church of Saint Basil of Tripoli, a parade and traditional dancing from local associations.
