General info

Welcome to Aigio...

Aigio is located at the northern Part of the Peloponnese and is the second largest city in the Prefecture of Achaia. It is built amphitheatrically near the beautiful coasts of the Corinthian golf and has approximately 30,000 residents. It’s an ideal location, just 39 Km from Patras and 175 Km from Athens away makes it one of the most beloved destinations for holidays. In addition Kalavryta and Mountainous Corinthia (Orini Corinthia) –which are famous winter destinations - are only a breath away.

In the past…

Aigio was built by “Pelasgians”. Later, the Ionians settled there and years later the Achaeans followed and occupied the region. It was the centre of historical and cultural events, having the supremacy over the rest Achaean cities. At a distance of approximately 7.5 Km from Aigio, lies the famous ancient city “Eliki”, with the recently discovered “Elikonios” Poseidon Temple. Unfortunately the city sank totally by a disastrous earthquake in 373 B.C. After Eliki’s destruction, Aigio became the centre of Achaean Administration and several years later the Pan-Hellenic Assembly decided there to start the famous Trojan campaign. In 146B.C. the city was conquered by Romans, while the subsequent history describes many conquerors and invaders. During the Byzantine period Aigio was captured by the Slavs, which renamed it in “Vostitsa”. But the important thing is that Aigio didn’t lose its significance over the years and maintained its traditions.

Aigio is a historical city, full of preserved buildings that describe its long history and offer a glance through the centuries. The Church of “Panagia Tripiti”, built on a rock that separates the seaside from the centre, Ernst Ziller’s buildings, the Archaeological Museum (old City Market), the Church of “Panagia Faneromeni” with the religious frescoes made by the famous painter “Fanelis” and the Church of “Isodia tis Theotokou”, are only some of the attractions that the city has to offer.
