Kalavryta

General info

Welcome to Kalavryta...

Kalavryta, one of the most historical cities of the Achaia Prefecture, is built at a height of 756 m at the same spot as the ancient city “Kynaetha”. Located within a distance of approximately 80 km from Patras and 190 km from Athens, Kalavryta is one of the most popular tourist destinations for both winter and summer time. The rare natural beauty, the intensely traditional elements, historical monuments and tranquillity which exudes the lush, green landscape, attract each year thousands of tourists. Kalavryta is also known for its ski centre which operates during the winter months and attracts thousands of visitors mainly from Athens and Patras.

In the past…

The history of Kalavryta begins around 776 BC with an ancient city by the name “Cynaethe” being located at the spot where the city stands today. It is alleged that Kalavryta got its final name during the Frankish domination in the 13th century AD. The city is considered to be of great historical significance because it was the place where the kick-start for the Greek revolution of 1821 was given. At the 21st March of that year, Greeks started numerous military operations against the Turkish tyrant. Kalavryta had unquestionably been one of the most afflicted villages during the period of the German occupation (World War II), since in December 13, 1943 the German occupying army killed nearly all the male population and destroyed the whole village.

Nowadays…

The province of Kalavryta is an ideal place for holidays. The significant tourist development of the recent years, its unique natural beauty, the preservation of its authenticity and its particular architecture, compose a magnificent whole, which impresses every visitor. In the beautiful city of Kalavryta you will find several picturesque shops, taverns and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy traditional Greek food and coffee. Since the town of Kalavryta welcomes a large number of tourists every year, especially during the winter months, everything is well organized. The main attraction is of course the ski centre - one of the most important in Greece- which is just 14 Km away from the city centre.
