Epidaurus

General info

Welcome to Epidaurus...

On the south-eastern side of the Prefecture of Argolis, just 125 kilometres from Athens, the capital of Greece, lies the city of Epidaurus. Epidaurus was one of the most sacred places in ancient Greece. It was created in 700 BC. in honour of God Apollo and is primarily known because of its ancient theatre which was built in the 4th century BC. The range of Epidaurus combines mountains, lush vegetation and plenty of wells with hot spring water. That is the reason why Epidaurus is considered as the predominantly place of healing and relaxation. Access is easy via the national road Athens-Corinth, or through the picturesque streets of Naufplio.

In the past...

According to the mythology, “Asclepius”, the son of Apollo, was born in Epidaurus. In order to be initiated into the secrets of Medicine, Apollo send Asklipios to the “Ccentaur Chiron”, who was also the trainer of many ancient heroes such as “Achilles” and “Hercules”. So Asclepius became the “God of Healing”, the one who could even resurrect the dead. In order to honour him the inhabitants of the region built a Temple (4th century BC) where there was a unique statue of Asklipios made of precious materials such as gold and ivory, along with the sacred serpent, which even nowadays is the symbol of medicine. However, the most famous sightseeing is the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, which was built during the 4th century BC, as an offering to God Dionysus, the God of entertainment. Given its size, the theatre can accommodate up to 14,000 people, while its acoustic is unique. The city of Epidaurus is also a symbol of Modern Greek history since it was the place where the first Greek State was founded in 1822. In addition, Epidaurus was one of the many cities of Peloponnese which inspired the Greek revolution of 1821. These facts made the small town famous worldwide through history books and documents.
