Ermioni

General info

Welcome to Ermioni...

Ermioni is a traditional fishermen’s village, located in the Prefecture of Argolis, in the Southeast edge of Argoliki peninsula. It is the capital of the province of “Ermionida”, which includes, besides Ermioni, the homonymous town, the town of “Kranidi” and the villages of “Iliokastro”, “Thermisia”, “Portocheli”, “Didima”, “Pelei”, “Rados”, “Fourni” and “Kilada”. It is also located very close to the islands of Hydra, Spetses and Poros and it is connected to them by sea with ferries which depart from the port of Piraeus. Ermioni is 180 km away from Athens, 48 km from Epidaurus and 77 km from Nafplio.

In the past…

The history of Ermioni is of great interest as both, historical sources and archaeological findings show an uninterrupted history of approximately 5,000 years. It was originally founded by “Dryops”, but later it was occupied by the “Dorians”, just like the whole region of Argolis. Homer mentions that Ermioni participated in the Trojan War, while later, as a member of the Peloponnesian Alliance it participated in both the Persian wars and the battles of “Salamis” and “Plataea”. The main reason that made Ermioni famous during the ancient years was mainly the fact that it held the secret for the cultivation of murex. Murex is a unique species of sea shell from which Ancient Greeks produced the colour of “rhodopsin”, commonly purple. They used the extract of that shell, in order to dye the royal tunics. After the fall of the Byzantine Empire the region was firstly under Frankish and then under Venetian occupation. Finally the Ottomans prevailed. Ermioni played an important part in Greeks’ struggle war for freedom and the revolution against the Turks in 1821.

Nowadays…

Ermioni is a beautiful town, located next to a full-of-pines cape, at the edge of the Argolic peninsula. This is a region with well-developed tourist infrastructure. The visitor can find hotels, rooms and apartments of every range. Both within the city of Ermioni and in the wider region of “Ermionida”, there are many attractions for the visitors, due to its great natural wealth and its long history. If someone chooses Ermioni for vacation he can easily perambulate in many surrounding areas and Islands. Within the city there are also scattered archaeological finds and many other attractions. In many parts of Ermioni there are amazing beaches for every taste, which, in parallel with the beautiful harbour and the Plain of Ermioni, full of oranges, olives and pomegranates, present a beautiful landscape.
