Welcome to Ano and Kato Doliana...

“Ano Doliana” is a traditional settlement of mountainous Arcadia, built on the northern slopes of Mountain “Parnon” at an altitude of 1050 m. Fairly some call this village “the balcony of Arcadia” as the unrivalled views of the plateau of Tripoli, mountain “Mainalos” , ”Chelmos”, “Erymanthos” and “Artemisio”, are unique.” Ano” and “Kato” Doliana (Upper and Lower Doliana) belong to North Kynouria’s municipality in the Arcadia Prefecture. The few inhabitants of the village, because of the particular geographical and climatic conditions, spend the winter time at Kato Doliana, which tends to become their permanent resident. During the summer months, in order to avoid the high temperatures, they move to Ano Doliana and in the first Sunday of November, they return again to their winter dwellings. The settlement of “Kato Doliana” is built on a lush area, full of olive groves. The visitor meets Kato Doliana at the beginning of the “Thyreas” Valley near the National Road Tripolis - Astros.

 

In the past...

Ano Doliana is well known for the historic battle during the Greek Revolution in May 1821. A detachment of 200 men leaded by “Nikitas Stamatelopoylos” (known also as “Nikitaras”), forced an army of 6,000 Turks in a disorderly retreat. The importance of this victory was the message that the Turks were not unbeaten and that freedom for Greece was possible. This incident boosted the morale of the Greek fighters and the name of “Nikitaras” remained in Greek history as an example of heroism.

 

Nowadays...

Ano Doliana is an ideal destination for those who love nature and tranquillity. The tourist settlement consisting of 20 little houses, perched on the slopes of the “Parnon” Mountain, at a height of approximately 1100 m. The place is perfect for various activities such as horse-riding, archery, mountain bike and, of course, hiking. In Kato Doliana, the main attraction that captures the interest of the visitors is the excellent climate, the imposing olive grove, the traditional cafes and traditional taverns.

  • the great Gorge of “Lepida” with the impressive waterfalls 

  • the Monastery “Sotiros Loukous”

  • the ancient settlements “Kourmeki” and “Tsioboro”

  • the archaeological sites of ancient “Eve” and the Villa of “Herodes Attikos”

  • the house of “Nikitaras”, the hero of the Greek revolution, in Ano Doliana

  • a few kilometres from the village stands the Church of “Ai-Lia” which offers a stunning view to the “Taugetos” Mountain, the Argolic Gulf and even the city of Naflio

 

How to go

By Car:

Ano Doliana is located almost 200 Km from Athens. Once you get on Attiki Odos towards Elefsina, continue your trip on the National Highway Athens-Corinth for approximately 80 km. Leave Corinth behind, and follow the way to Tripolis (attention to road signs in order not to miss the exit). A few kilometres after Tripolis, follow the road signs that will lead you to “Leonidion”, “Astros”, and “Agios Petros” and from there to Kato Doliana.

 

Total travel time : 120-140 minutes

 

 

Kato Doliana is located 190 Km from Athens. Once you get on Attiki Odos towards Elefsina, continue your trip on the National Highway Athens-Corinth for approximately 80 km. Leave Corinth behind and follow the way to Tripolis (attention to road signs in order not to miss the exit). A few kilometres after Tripolis, follow the road signs that will lead you to “Leonidion”, “Astros”, and “Agios Petros” and from there to Kato Doliana.

 

Total travel time : 110-130 minutes
