Astros Kynourias

General info

Welcome to Astros Kynourias...

Astros Kynourias is located on the large plain between the foot of the Mountain “Parnonas”, and the coastal road in the East of the Prefecture Arcadia. The landscape is dominated by the grandiose mountain sides and simultaneously on the opposite side the amazing plain of Astros, ending both up to the beautiful blue sea. The crystal clear sea and the plantations of vineyards and olive groves attract many tourists each year from all around the world.

In the past…

Kynouria got its name from the old settler “Kynouros”. The history of Astros Kynourias starts in antiquity, where the Spartans fought a fierce battle against the “Argians” in 541 BC. At a distance of 10 kilometres from today’s Astros, in the "Hellinikon" area, there was a Temple dedicated to the God Apollo whom the "Kynourii" (inhabitants of the “Kynouria” Municipality) worshipped in particular. Today, at the same location, there are ruins of an ancient city aged between the 5th and the 3rd century BC, as the archaeologists estimate.

Nowadays…

The area, that nowadays forms the municipality of North Kynouria where Astros lies, is carrying rich and unfading historical and popular culture, great traditions and remarkable architectural heritage. The good tourist infrastructure in combination with the natural beauty of the sea and the surrounding area, guarantee a pleasant stay for every guest.
