Dimitsana

General info

Welcome to Dimitsana...

Dimitsana, the capital of the province “Gortinia” is located in the northwestern part of the Arcadia Prefecture and it spreads amphitheatrically above the gorge of the River “Lousios”. The Arcadian village, built on the Western outskirts of the Mountain “Mainalo”, at an altitude of 960-1080 m is bordered by the plain of Megalopolis and the eloquent mountain of “Taugetos”. It lies just 50 km from Tripoli and about 210 km from Athens, and is the seat of the municipality of Gortynia.

In the past…

The first reference to Dimitsana was made in 174 AD, when the ancient traveller Pausanias speaks in his “Arkadika” about the beautiful city “Tefthi”. The ancient city participated in the Trojan war, led by Teythi or Ornitos, who was punished – according to the Myth - by goddess Athena with an incurable illness, because of his aggressive behaviour. The descent of the Slavs between the 7th and 9th century, influenced the entire Peloponnese. It is said that Dimitsana got its current name, most likely from the Slavs. From the 16th century onwards, the area was very popular in the field of literature and arts, but also in commerce and crafts. During the revolution of 1821, Dimitsana was an important supply centre for the entire Peloponnese to gunpowder, while after the liberation and the establishment of the Greek State, it consolidated its position as a main financial and commercial centre.

Nowadays…

The natural beauty of Dimitsana in combination with the traditional architecture (with stone built houses and cobblestone pavements), convert this place to one of the most popular destinations for holidays. Visitors have the chance to visit various attractions such as museums and monasteries but also the beautiful Lousios Gorge. Local dishes, such as the Rooster with noodles, rabbit, goat, roasts, traditional pasta and sweet, herbs and spices are some of the characteristics of the cuisine of modern Dimitsana and can offer to the visitor new taste experiences.
