Karytena

General info

Welcome to Karytena...

Built amphitheatrically, around the medieval castle and near the crossing of the Rivers “Lousios” and “Alfios”, lies the beautiful Karytena. The picturesque village that has been declared as a preservative settlement is located at an altitude of 582 metres and is located 54 Km. from Tripoli, 20 Km from Megalopolis and approximately 218 Km from Athens. Karytena is one of the most scenic and historic villages in Arcadia. It is an impressive stone- built place with excellent double-decker stone houses (of the 19th century), old Byzantine churches and beautiful natural environment.

In the past…

Karytena is first mentioned during the period of the Frankish occupation. At this period of time the village was often described as the "Toledo of Greece", not only because of its medieval architectural character but also because the region was an important commercial centre having as main products the wine, silk and tobacco. In 1320 Karytaina passed to the hands of the “Palaiologos” family, until the middle of the 15th century. After that it was conquered by the Turks. During the period of the Turkish occupation, Karytena was an important commercial centre, while up to 1830 it was also an administrative centre. At the beginning of the Greek revolution, the castle of Karytaina was used as a refuge for children and women and later as a hideout for the Greek freedom fighter “Theodoros Kolokotronis”.

Nowadays…

Karytena is a mountainous tourist destination with many hotels, hostels, restaurants, cafes and bars that offer high quality services to every visitor. Karytena has won, over the past years, a significant share in the field of alternative tourism and many people visit it for rafting, excursions and relaxing. If you visit this beautiful village do not forget to buy local pasta, honey, chestnuts as well as other traditional goods.
