General info

Welcome to Levidi...

Levidi is built at the foot of Mount Menalo and it gains the visitors thanks to its rich cultural and historical heritage. Just 175 kilometres from Athens away it is one of the nearest tourist destinations for the citizens of the Greek Capital. The beautiful spinney with the stone arches at the edge, show that tradition, nature, beauty, history, culture and hospitality are the main characteristics of this region. The benchmark of the city is the Central Square- surrounded by shops, restaurants and taverns- which has become a magnet for locals and tourists, while in the centre of the square dominates the beautiful Church.

In the past…

Levidi has its roots somewhere in the medieval times. Long after the decay of ancient “Orchomenos” which dominated in the region, Levidi started growing. In 1821, it was the first bastion to the North of Tripolis and in April 1821 the first winning battle of the Greek Revolution took place there. The statue of the chieftain “Striftompolas” from “Kertezi”, who fell in this battle, today adorns the square of Levidi. In a second major battle in November 1826, the chieftain “ Nicholaou”- was killed too. Levidi evolved during the years into a beautiful town with remarkable intellectual life. During the German Occupation the city paid its significant role to the Resistance with the hanging of many brave inhabitants. It is worth mentioning that during the difficult years of the German Occupation, the inhabitants of Levidi hosted and raised many children from Athens which were decimated by the hunger.

Nowadays…

In Levidi gathers with a magical way all periods of Time. The strong cultural and folk elements, keep the interest of the visitors steady. Antiquity gives its presence through the theatre and the ruins of temples and the middle Ages through the early Christian monuments, churches and monasteries. In addition the beautiful nature provides the ability to participate in a number of activities such as skiing in the ski centre, walks, trekking, mountain bike, 4 x 4, and rafting in the “Lousios” River. Levidi has also many taverns (with well-cooked dishes made of local products), coffee shops, traditional cafes and bars. Combined with the traditional hostels, beautiful rooms and mansions every visitor will enjoy his stay.
