Megalopoli

General info

Welcome to Megalopolis...

The city of Megalopolis is the capital and the centre of the homonym province of the Prefecture of Arcadia. It is located in the southwest part of the Prefecture of Arcadia, and it is 200 km from Athens and 35 km. from Tripoli away. Megalopolis is situated in the Centre of a fertile plateau, the second largest in then prefecture of Arcadia (after that of Mantinea). Especially since 1965 when the large electrical-power station of DEH was builded in the region the population of the city increased very quickly. Currently it has almost 5,000 inhabitants from witch a large part is working for the DEH power station.

In the past...

At the Beginning “Megali Poli - Megalopolis” (the big City) was divided in two parts. The northern part consisted of the market-the Temple of “Zeus Lykaios” and the Temple of Rea, the portico of Philip and other public buildings. The southern part is adorned by the Theatre, "to megiston ton en Elladi" (the largest of those in Greece), which according to the scholars could host about 21,000 spectators. In the period of the Byzantine Empire, the area experienced incredible catastrophes of its ancient works from fanatical Christians who were unable to understand the magnificence of the ancient Greek civilization. Because of that the “Big City – Megalopolis” was abandoned by its citizens, who moved to the mountains, where they felt safer. In 1833 (after the liberation of Greece) the capital of the province of Megalopolis, was Leontari”, situated 12 km. away from Megalopolis.

Nowadays...

In recent years Megalopolis has evolved into a modern city. It has public services, banks, as well as a growth commercial centre, around the central square, named “platia Th. Kolokotroni”. There are also restaurants, taverns and several entertainment facilities. It has also modern sport centers, two stadiums, a Medical Center and an ecological park in the near area (at the village “Psathi”). Today, the plain of Megalopolis is covered by extensive and dense oak- forests and crops as well. But large areas have been undertaken for the excavation and extraction of lignite. The basin, however, still offers interesting and largely unknown paths among dense forests and lush vegetation.
