General info

Welcome to Amaliada...

Amaliada is located in the Western Peloponnese and belongs administratively to the Prefecture of Ilia. It is situated in the Centre of a fertile plain and extends up to the coasts of the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest city in the prefecture with 21,000 inhabitants and the fourth largest in the Western Greece, after Patras, Agrinio and Pyrgos.

In the past…

The origins of Amaliada can be found in the Byzantine era. The first signs of inhabitation were those of the ancient city “Panagia Platytera” which was erected at the same point where the city of Amaliada is built nowadays. In Later years the famous “Frankavilla” settlement was created there and soon after the settlement of “Kalitsas” appeared. During the Ottoman period “Dervi- Tselepi” was formed and was considered as the seat of the Turkish administration. After the liberation of Greece it became the seat of the municipality “Ellisis” and its surrounding settlements. The great fertility of the plain and the emerging development of the city attracted people from the islands “Zakynthos” and “Kefalonia”, who moved to that region for a better life. In 1885 the two settlements – “Kalitsa” and “Derbi Tselepi” were united and created the city of Amaliada.

Nowadays Amaliada is a modern city with significant commercial and remarkable cultural activity. Due to its unique geographical position as it is surrounded by the mountains of Peloponnese and also very close to the coastline, visitors can enjoy the beautiful landscape and explore many beaches during their holidays. Amaliada offers to its visitors also a lot of sport activities such as canoeing and kayaking at the “Pinios” River during the entire year. Among the city's museums, these of particular interest are: the Public Folk Museum, the Museum of Greek national resistance "Nikos Beloyannis”, and the “Tatani” Museum.
