General info

Welcome to Andritsena...

Andritsaina, often called also the “stone city”, is located on the southeastern side of the Prefecture of Ilia in Peloponnese. The city is built in the mountainous area of Olympia at an altitude of 750 m. Although it belongs to the Prefecture of Ilia, it is located very close to the prefectures of Arcadia and Messenia. Connected with the mountainous villages of Arcadia and integraded in an area rich in vegetation and water, the town has approximately 575 inhabitants. It stands 240 kilometres away from Athens, 65 km from Pyrgos- the capital of Ilia Prefecture and 80 km from Tripoli, the capital of Arkadia Prefecture.

In the past…

The history of Andritsena goes way back in time, at the era of the Frankish domination (12th-13th century). Historical evidence for the long history of the city is the reference in the Chronicles of “Morea”, project of an unnamed writer of the 14th century, who described the history and the organisation of the Peloponnese during the period of Frankish domination. Andritsena also played an important role in the revolution of 1770, the so-called “Orlov” revolution, and of course the revolution of 1821. It is rumoured that the name of the city is due to “Andritsena”-the widow of the Cretan “Andritsos” - who founded an Inn, in the current site of the settlement during the 9th century. Over the years, houses began to be built near the “Andritsena’s” Inn and over time a settlement was formed.

Andritsena still conserves its traditional architectural style and the character of the old city, a fact which commutes the city itself into an attraction. The touristic development during the recent years has been rapid, giving as a result services that can satisfy every guest. Hostels, traditional hotels, cafes and taverns compose the beautiful picture of today’s Andritsena.
