Lechena

General info

Welcome to Lechena...

Lechena, just 273 kilometres far from Athens, is a town located in the Prefecture of Ilia in the western part of Peloponnese. It borders with the Ionian Sea and is directly across from Kefalonia, the largest Ionian island . The mountainous Ilia- in which Lechena is sited- is considered as one of the most beautiful parts of Greece, since it covers all tastes, combining beautiful sandy beaches and mountains (specifically the mount “Erymanthos”).

In the past…

In 1835, in the Prefecture of Ilia a new municipality was formed, having “Myrtountia” as its seat. Myrtountia was the former name of Lechena, and it took its name by the ancient city of Myrsinos. However in 1873, due to a smallpox epidemic which broke out in the region, the seat of the municipality moved temporarily in “Andravida”, a town in the Prefecture of Achaia. During the Greek revolution in 11/07/1825 the famous “ battle of Lechena” took place in the region. The residents of the municipality and the broader region opposed to the Ottoman Empire heroically. Lechena was also the hometown of one of the most important personalities of modern Greek literature. The novel writer Andreas Karkavitsas was born there in the year 1866.He left as legacy many significant literary works, which are taught in schools even today.

Nowadays…

Although Lechena is a predominately rural area with rich vegetation and farming, a great tourist development is noted over the last few years. Many hotels, rooms, taverns and night clubs made their appearance in the surrounding area. Their aim is the best possible service for the visitors of this beautiful city. You should not forget to visit “Karkavitsas” home, which is located in the city centre (agora) and operates nowadays as a museum open to the public. This is a way to get know many aspects of this very remarkable personality. On your way to the lake “Kotychiou” you will go past the place where the old salt- lake of Lechena was sited. This was one of the largest salt lakes in the country for over 91 years. Before departing from Lechena don't forget to obtain the excellent oil and milk produced in the region.
