Vartholomio

General info

Welcome to Vartholomio...

Vartholomio is a flat hamlet in the Prefecture of Elis with a population of 3100 residents and is the seat of the homonymous municipality. It is located in the western part of the prefecture, next to the point where the river “Pinios” turns south to eventually flow into the Ionian Sea, opposite the island of “Zakynthos”. It is situated in the northwest part of the town of Pyrgos, 32 km away from it, whereas it is linked to the new motorway of Patra - Pyrgos through Gastouni. Besides, it is connected by road to the main urban centers of the region as well as to the port of Kyllini.

In the past…

This settlement was constructed during the Byzantine era to protect its residents against the frequent attacks by Algerian pirates on the Peloponnesian coast. It was originally called “Valtohori” or “ Vatrahohori” since the region was full of frogs (Greek: Vatraxos). It took its current name from the Kingdom of the Franks (1204 - 1430), by Knight Frank Bartholomew, who dominated the region. According to another version, the name Vartholomio derived from the nature of the land itself, which was swampy. The historic battle, in which Turkish and Egyptian troops were killed after encountering strong resistance from Bartholomew, took place on November 10, 1825.

Nowadays...

Vartholomio combines natural beauty with modern tourism infrastructure. The numerous hotels, hostels, restaurants, cafes and bars provide high quality services to visitors who can enjoy a pleasant and comfortable stay. The picturesque hamlet is also ideal for short but long-distance trips.
