General info

Welcome to Zacharo...

Zacharo is a hamlet situated in the prefecture of Elis, with a population of more than 6.000 residents. It is located on the highway road connecting Kyparissia and Pirgos, which is 32 km southeast of Pyrgos and about 3 kilometers east of the coastline of the Gulf of Kyparissia. The eastern part of Zaharo spreads over a hillside, while the west part extends over a flat area surrounded by hillocks and fertile stretches that end up in a sandy beach 5 km in length. At the northernmost point of this beach, there is a Lake called “Caiaphas”, where one can see the famous mineral springs as well. Zacharo is also the seat of the homonymous municipality, which belongs to the province of Olympia. It includes all other traditional, contiguous villages.

In the past…

The town of Zacharo has been relatively recently established, given that there is no information on any such settlement before the Revolution of 1821. Besides, the establishment of the municipality of Zaharo goes back in the early 1880s. Before the Revolution, the area had been inhabited by seasonal agro-pastoralists of the contiguous villages, whereas it became a manor in the 18th century. Zacharo’s economy and population have been growing steadily and quickly, a development which was interrupted for a short time by the devastating fires of 2007.

Nowadays…

In addition to having a prominent position in the agricultural production of Greece, Zacharo has an important, multifaceted tourism potential too. Historic sites along with pristine beaches are combined with beautiful, picturesque landscapes, scenic places and natural sights, such as its long beach, full of dunes, which offers shelter to “Caretta Caretta” turtles in the summertime. Besides, there is also a place called Caiaphas, famous for its lake and spas. The Beach of Zacharo has been repeatedly awarded by the European community with the blue flag, which symbolizes its beauty and cleanliness. The area of Zacharo includes significant monuments and is a place where one can gain access to the ancient sites of “Olympia” (25 kilometers away) and “Figalia”, which leads to the magnificent temple of “Apollo Epicures” (15 kilometers away).
