Derveni

General info

Welcome to Derveni Korinthias...

Derveni is a coastal town and seat of the municipality of “Evrostini”. It is located 58 km from Corinth, 80 km from Patras and 140 from Athens and has approximately 1500 inhabitants. Derveni is the administrative and commercial centre of the municipality and its economy is mainly based on tourism. This surrounding area is of incredible natural beauty, as it combines perfectly the mountainous landscape with the sea, while the coasts of clear blue water and the switching landscape attracts many visitors during the summer months. It constitutes a nodal point for the wider region, as there are many attractions nearby which can be easily visited.

In the past…

The history of the region around Derveni begins from prehistoric times with the advent of the “Pelasgi”. Derveni was built between 1861 and 1865 by “Zacholites”, who, in search for new resources, went to the coasts of the region to find a better place to live. The name of the town derives from the Turkish word “derven” which means “narrow passage”, because of Derveni’s location, in a narrow passage between mountains and sea. Derveni was renamed two more times: as “Stenoporon” in 1928 and “Aktaion” in 1929.

Nowadays…

Nowadays Derveni is a very attractive tourist destination. It offers excellent tourist accommodation and modern tourist services. At several key points of this town there are memorial monuments that tell the stories of battles that have taken place from time to time in Derveni, such as graphics chapels and sacred temples that have been built in the region. In Derveni the visitor can meet many traditional houses where wood, stone and tiles are the main material of their structure. There are also modern buildings, worth to be visited or seen, like the Church of “Agios Giannis”, the big square with the schools and the marina next to the old port in “Mavra Litharia”. Just above the municipality stands the “Black Mountain” (1,757 m), a sample of unique natural beauty and also a natural border to the Prefecture of Achaea. At a short distance from the foot of the mountain lies the beach, which has a length of 15 km. It is separated into small creeks and hosts the ancient port of the settlement “Maura Litharia”. Apart from the mountain landmark and the sea, there are also two beautiful rivers, the “Skoupeikos” and the “Zaholitikos” river, which are definitely worth a visit.
