Trikala Corinthias

General info

Welcome to Trikala of Corinthia...

Perched at an altitude of 900 meters, Trikala of Corinthia is the largest village on the eastern side of Ziria and one of the oldest mountain resorts. It is a mountainous paradise just 143 km away from Athens, so close to what one would call a perfect destination, especially for the cold months of winter. Built on ancient Mysaiou in the 10th century, Trikala seems to have received its name from the three goods the area offers: clean air, good wine and plenty of water with a special taste. In history we meet his town back in 1821 because of the very significant role it played during the Greek Revolution. The village is divided and consists essentially of three districts, the Lower, the Middle and Upper Trikala. The Lower District of Trikala, which is built at a height of 900m, has a population of 329 residents. There one sees holy temples of enormous historical and religious importance. The "Middle District" is built at a height of 1050m and is inhabited by 214 residents. The breathtaking views and the cold, running water are the major attraction of this area. Finally, the so-called "Upper District” (Ano) Trikala is built just 10m higher, numbering 173 residents, who live literally in a forest of firs.

In the past…

The famous historian Pausanias refers to the existence of the sanctuary of Demeter Mysia, where, in ancient times, there were seven-day ceremonies held in her honor. Within a short distance from the Mysaio, was the sanctuary of Asclepius, the father of medicine, which was called "Cyrus" (meaning strengthening, force) and is estimated to have been built in the 5th century BC. Patients resorted to seek healing in the sanctuary of Asclepius. The sacred "Cyrus" was considered to be a kind of hospital at that time. In the interior, near the largest of the springs, there was the statue of Aesculapius, which was probably the same as depicted on the coins of Pellineion (name of local residents). Trikala of Corinthia was considered, for many years, to be a region famous for its benefits and of its thermal climate and the environment. During the Turkish domination, Trikala was a community of Argolidokorinthia, which had huge financial and administrative power. Actually, Trikala ruled Corinth to a large extent and was one of these "centers" of the revolution of 1821. In the monastery of St. George, inside his attic, there was a "secret school" the existence of which is testified by the fencing. The reference to the dominant family of landowners "Notaras” is also interesting. Patriarch of the family was Panoutsos Notaras who served as chairman of the National Assembly of Epidaurus after the revolution. The family mansion of Notaras survives until today in Ano Trikala. Famous personalities who were born in Trikala of Corinth were the Saints Makarios and Gerasimos as well as the patriarchs of Jerusalem Dositheos and Chrysanthos. Besides, The "Hotel Theoxenia" of Trikala worths to be mentioned. It was built in 1930 and has hosted well-known personalities of that era, such as Queen Frederika and King "Farouk" of Egypt, which he visited often.

Nowadays…

Hospitality is the dominant element of Trikala of Corinthia. Visitors truly feel "like home" in a traditional and warm environment, while in the picturesque taverns, which have a family character on their whole, one can enjoy homemade recipes, cooked dishes, delicious appetizers, fine wines and panoramic views from Ziria till he Corinthian Bay. The traditional element is maintained also in the village of Middle Trikala, though combined with new buildings which are made of stone and wood and are equipped with the most modern facilities. Its rapidly growing tourism infrastructure in hostels, hotels, cafes and taverns promises unique moments of relaxation in the magnificent mountain scenery, while the mountain hiking trails in the village are perfect for anyone who wants to wander round Ziria and visit its attractions. Trikala of Corinthia offers accommodations of all types and for all budgets. There are also cafes, bars and restaurants with traditional Greek cuisine.
