Xylokastro

General info

Welcome to Xylokastro of Corinth...

Xylokastro is situated about 42 km northwest of Corinth, located on the old national road and the railroad of Athens - Patras, near the river “Trikalitis”. It is the seat of the municipality of Xylokastro and the third most populous city of Corinth (about 6,000 residents). Its name derives from the wooden barracks that was on the west side of the hill, above the town, which served also as an observatory. The locals gave it the name "Wooden Castle", thus the whole surrounding area with its few settlements took the name Xylokastro. In the 18th century, Xylokastro included a few houses that served as larders and belonged to people from “Trikala” who had their own farmland. It was mostly covered with dense forest of pines and lentisks. Many parts of the forest were depilated since the land was fertile. Thus, the places near the sea (that is today “Pefkia”) were the only ones left intact, because of the fact that their soil was sandy and could not be cultivated. The city is famous for its raisin, which has been exported to both the surrounding areas and the rest of Greece, as well as to other countries abroad. The construction of the railroad contributed to population growth and economic development of the region, seeing that the trade of raisins was conducted not only by sea but also by rail (by means of the rail coaches of the new rail network). In 1919 the Greek Government proclaimed Xylokastro summer residence for foreign visitors, whereas the creation of a tourist kiosk in Pefkia in 1932 boosted the city’s development rapidly. Since then and until today it has been one of the largest resorts of the Peloponnese.

In the past…

In the 18th century, Xylokastro or “Oxokampos” as it was then known, had a few more houses that served as larders and belonged to people from Trikala. The area was largely covered with dense forest of pines and lentisk. Today pine forest of Xylokastro is a relic of that forest. All the other parts were depilated and cultivated since land was fertile. “Pefkias” remained simply a forest, since it was by the beach and the soil was sandy. In 1919, during the Presidency of Constantine Dasios, Xylokastro was officially announced as summer residence for foreign visitors. Ever since, Xylokastro began to change its style and soon after became a wonderful spa town. Every summer, Kings, prime ministers, famous actors, famous artists and famous families from all over Greece would spend their holidays in Xylokastro which was considered to be the first tourist attraction of the country. In the
70's, Xylokastro changed its form, with many buildings starting to spring up everywhere. The coastal road (Karamanlis) changed appearance and the central Xylokastro acquired dozens of blocks. Xylokastro became the tourist center of Corinth, and hundreds of visitors came to watch the extremely high quality cultural and sporting events in the municipality. Nowadays, it is considered to be one of the largest tourist resorts of the Peloponnese with boosted tourist traffic and development.

Nowadays…

Xylokastro is a unique destination, where you can escape both in winter and in summer time. On the one hand, it combines superb sea and a modern marina with beautiful mountains and on the other hand, natural beauty with a verdurous pine forest. All over the year, there are thousands of things to do and many events in which you can possibly take part. A city with history across the centuries, Xylokastro is a unique tourist resort with many contrasts for all seasons and all tastes, which deserves your visit. The long beach in the Corinthian Gulf as well as the picturesque park with its characteristic name i.e. "Pefkias", have made Xylokastro an important resort and an ideal solution for short getaways from Athens.
