Welcome to Elafonisos...

Elafonisos (Deer island) is a small Isle in the Southeast edge of Peloponnese. The access is easy, as it is only 570 metres away from the coast of Peloponnese. This small island with an extent of just 21 square Kilometres has only one town, called “Chora”, which is the harbour, too. The population of this small island is no more than 800 inhabitants. In order to reach Elafonisos beginning from Athens, you need about 5 hours by car to Punta and another 10 minutes from there by ferry boat to the island.

In the past...

Elafonisos owes its name to the numerous deer which existed in the region in antiquity. As mentioned by “Pausanias”, there were many shrines of Goddess Artemis (the Goddess of hunting) and plethora of red deer. That’s why in the Venetian maps of the 15th century, the island was named “cervi”, which means “deer”, rendering the existence of these animal in the region. In the 16th and 17th centuries the island was the base of operations against corsairs and pirates. Nowadays the "Strait of Elafonisos" is still the main passage of ships to the Eastern Mediterranean Gulf, with hundreds of them passing every day.

Elafonisos is a part of Greece worth a visit. A small “paradise on Earth", with golden sand beaches and beautiful crystal clear sea that promises the visitor relaxation and pleasant moments of calmness. This little island is mainly known for its large sandy beaches, such as the "Simou” and the “Sarakiniko” beach. But Elafonisos does not only offer amazing and picturesque beaches to the visitor. Hiking lovers have one more reason to visit the island, because apart from sports they have the opportunity to explore a truly magical place.
