Karyes

General info

Welcome to Karyes...

The village of Karyes has approximately 900 inhabitants and is built on the slopes of the “Parnonas” Mountain at an altitude of 950 meters, very close to the border of the prefectures Laconia and Arcadia. It is located 35 kilometres north of Sparta and 37 km south of Tripoli, while the distance from Athens is 200 kilometres. The beautiful landscape combined with the morphology, the lush vegetation, the cool climate in summer and the relatively mild in the winter, offers a comfortable, quiet and active stay to the visitors throughout the year.

In the past…

“Karya”, from which the village received its name, was the daughter of King “Dionas” and “Ifithea”, which according to the legend, was transformed by God Dionysos to a walnut- tree. The history of the village is great. The involvement of Karyates in the Trojan War is certain, such as, in the Peloponnesian war (431-404 BC). During the Byzantine times, the region was named “Arachova”. The harsh period of Ottoman domination that came after, is characterised by sacrifices and struggles for the revolution. The brave attitude of the residents remained even through the difficult days of the German occupation, when the conquistadors burned the entire village in March, 1944.

Nowadays…

Nowadays approximately 900 people live in Karyes, engaged in farming, bee-keeping and Agriculture (mainly they grow chestnut and walnut trees). There is an active rural farming association, a group of producers engaged in processing packing and standardization of the local products. It follows a mild program of development in “agritourism”. Apart from the taverns of the village, there are three hostels which operate all year round. Karyes is the perfect place to start hiking explorations in the paths of mountain “Parnon”.
