Methoni

General info

Welcome to Methoni...

Methoni is a beautiful coastal hamlet of the south-western Peloponnese. It is located at an altitude of 20 m, 61 km away from Kalamata, 220 km away from Patras and 292 km away from Athens. It is built on the ruins of the ancient town of Methoni and is regarded to be one of the most historic cities of the Peloponnese. Methoni became known for its port which was of great strategic and commercial importance to both the town itself and the surrounding area. There you can also find the imposing Venetian Castle, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, which is famous for its fortified position during the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period. This is the reason why many people tried to conquer it over the centuries, such as the Franks, Venetians and Ottomans.
Methoni is nowadays one of the most beautiful areas of the Peloponnese. Its natural beauties, its historical sites and amazing beaches have turned it into one of the most popular tourist resorts of Messenia and the southern Peloponnese.

In the past…

In ancient times, Methoni was known as Pidasos. Homer refers to it as one of the seven cities that Agamemnon offered to Achilles so as to appease his wrath and to persuade him to return to the battle. During the Roman period, Methoni gained its independence from the emperor "Trajan". In early Christian times the port of Methoni was an important trading center and a supply station for ships. In 1204, the towni was occupied by the Franks as the whole Byzantine Empire. The Frankish domination in lasted until 1206, when the area was conquered by the Venetians. From 1500 to 1686 Methoni stayed under the yoke of the Turks. From 1686 to 1715 it passed again into the hands of the Venetian and in 1715 once more into the hands of the Turks. During the Greek Revolution, the castle of Methoni was not occupied by the Greek rebels, due to the resistance of the Ottoman fortified population, despite their repeated efforts.

Nowadays…

Methoni is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in Greece, an ideal place for relaxation throughout the year. This place is still authentic and unique, with a typical warm and gentle Mediterranean climate and a beautiful surrounding area. It is a place rich in flavors, aromas and memories of the past. Tourism infrastructure of Methoni has been greatly improved during the last years. Nowadays you can find a wide choice of hotels, guesthouses and inns where you can enjoy a pleasant and comfortable stay. There are also many restaurants and Greek taverns, where you taste all the traditional culinary flavors of the Messenia’s cuisine.
