Petalidi

General info

Welcome to Petalidi...

On the west side of the Messenian Gulf are some of the most famous and beautiful resorts of the prefecture of Messenia, which combine in a unique and special way mountain and sea. Located approximately 260 kilometers away from Athens and 27 km south of Kalamata, the capital of the prefecture, there is the village Petalidi, which was once a simple fishing village that later on became pole of attraction for tourists wishing to enjoy relaxing holidays. The numerous kilometers of coastline of the county is really a hidden paradise. Seashores full of white pebbles, sand, and calm, hidden coves scattered in all directions of Messenia. Petalidi is famous not only for its magical beaches but also for its sights and rich history which takes us back to antiquity.

In the past…

Ancient Koroni, which was founded back in 365 BC, is regarded to have been built in this region. On account of its position, some archaeological findings have come to light and are mostly kept in the museum of Kalamata. They have also found traces of a Mycenaean citadel built on a hill near the village. In the Middle Ages ancient Koroni was the Bishopric seat, while during the 7th or 8th century, perhaps because of the Slavic and Arab raids, its people moved south to present Koroni, from which its name derives. Since the 19th century the residents of the village are immigrants from the Mani Peninsula.

Nowadays…

The atmosphere in Petalidi is Mediterranean, thus olive groves and fig trees grow to adorn this little gem of the Messenian Gulf. The area owes its beauty to its morphological diversity, since plains, mountains and endless beaches form a truly idyllic portrait. The local products produced in the region are mostly oil, figs, citrus, raisins and wine. In Petalidi you will find numerous amazing beaches, some with fine golden sand and others with pebbles, where you can enjoy the sun and sea and relish endless moments of carefree relaxation. Except for the interesting sights and amazing beaches, it also has an ever growing tourism infrastructure. The many hotels, hostels, restaurants, cafes and bars provide high quality services to visitors who can enjoy a pleasant and comfortable stay.
